2025 Alf Foundation Grantee Anja Salonen

Anja Salonen’s practice is oriented around the distortion of signs, icons, and images through the materiality of paint, emphasizing their malleable states in historical and contemporary mythologies.

Her work approaches themes of perception, visibility, feminine subjectivity, constructions of time, artifice, and the real, working in a layered process of addition and subtraction, creation and destruction.

She is consistently developing her relationship with painting as a medium that is both pictorial and material, finding ways that the material can enact elements of image to create an embodied experience of ideas through paint.
